A Dosa Alternative

Dosa is a go to breakfast in most of our homes. Why? Because it’s simple to prepare and the batter lasts for a week. But having dosa every day can sometimes get boring.  Here’s a delicious alternative, Pesarattu. This traditional, protein-packed recipe from Andhra is served with ginger chutney. Made with green grams, it’s one of the easiest breakfast recipes you’ll ever find.  Let’s walk through this simple and wholesome recipe, from the leading exporter of sunflower oil.

Ingredients

  1. Whole moong dal 1 cup

  2. Ginger ¾

  3. Green chillies according to preference

  4. Cumin seeds 1 tsp

  5. Raw rice 2 tbsp

  6. Salt as per taste

  7. Oil 2 tbsp

  8. Chopped onions ¾ cup

  9. Water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, rinse and wash the moong beans. Once cleaned, add fresh water and let them soak for 4–6 hours.

  2. After soaking, drain the water and rinse the beans again.

  3. In a blender, add the soaked dal, green chillies, cumin seeds, ginger, and salt. Add a little water and blend it into a thick batter.

  4. The batter can be smooth or slightly coarse, depending on your preference, but it should have a pourable and spreadable consistency.

  5. In a small pan, heat a teaspoon of oil. Add cumin seeds, chopped onions, and green chillies. Once aromatic, add this mixture to the batter.

  6. Heat a tawa and season it with a few drops of oil.

  7. Once hot, pour ½ cup of the batter onto the tawa and quickly spread it into a thin layer, starting from the center.

  8. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for a few minutes. Add a teaspoon of oil around the edges.

  9. When the pesarattu turns golden, flip and cook the other side for a minute.

  10. Flip it again and fold it in half.

  11. Serve hot on a plate with ginger chutney.

  12. Your tasty and protein-rich pesarattu is ready!
